What to Wear // Late Fall Wedding

This past weekend one of my oldest friends got married and I couldn’t be happier! Although it was freezing this past Saturday it was clear skies and sunny out, a perfect day for a late fall wedding.

The older we get the fewer opportunities we have to get dressed up, but although weddings are a day to support and celebrate with two people united in marriage it is also an opportunity to dress up more than you would normally.

Weddings take place in every season and sometimes it can be hard to figure out what to wear in some of those seasons; especially late fall and winter.

When I was looking for a dress for this wedding I had a slight idea what I wanted. I know I wanted long sleeves but also flowy and definitely a fall color palette. One of my favorite places to get dresses from is Nordstrom, they have a great selection and I think their website is very searchable when you aren’t sure what you are looking for. Also, I love that they usually have a ‘Dresses Under $100‘ section, because you shouldn’t be spending an arm and leg.

I ordered three dresses knowing that I would only be keeping one if I was lucky and with Nordstrom’s great shipping and return policy it so easy to just click and buy. Two of the three dresses were from the same brand and the sizing was a bit funky and they ended up being too small, but my third dress from BB Dakota was a winner winner chicken dinner!

This dress truly had everything I was looking for – bell sleeves with a fit-and-flare silhouette and not to mention this Bordeaux color with this more minimal floral pattern. One of the features of this dress that I actually thought I wasn’t going to care for was the collar. The dress has a keyhole neck with button closure which gives the dress a more jewel neckline which I don’t normally gravitate to. As soon as I slipped it on it fit like a glove and I knew my search was over and my favorite part of the dress was the neckline!

Now, remember how I said that day was freezing??? Well, we can’t forget two very very important pieces to this outfit – tights and a coat. I just picked up these black tights from Old Navy, I don’t usually spend a lot on tights and don’t really see the point too. The cocoon silhouette coat is Lucky Brand and I picked it up from Macy’s at the end of the season last year. I wasn’t planning on buying a coat and thought it would be fun to try it on and well the rest was history. Unfortunately, it is unavailable but here are a few other coats I really like – 1 / 2 / 3 / 4

And of course lets not forget the piece of resistance, the velvet platform shoes. I felt the dress gave off a 70’s vibe and wanted to have a bit fun with the shoes but not spend a fortune. I had been eyeing these shoes at Target for a little bit but had nowhere to wear them to so didn’t buy them but once I decided on this dress it was game over. To top it off Target was having a 20% off shoe sale which made these puppies right around $26! And do you want to know the best part? THEY WERE SO COMFORTABLE! I wore them all night and didn’t take them off till I got home. Towards the end of the night my feet were getting a little sore but to be fair I danced my ass off.

What to wear for late fall/winter weddings can be tricky and stress, but they don’t have to be. I recommend purchasing a few options from a store you know and trust and bringing them home to try on and play with. Tights are your best friend and a cute/functional coat is your best accessory. Also, remember you can always have fun and spice up a look with shoes, it is unexpected and makes an impression.

Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls

The transitional period where summer starts to slow down and it begins to get darker little by little. That time where you can open your windows again and start to feel the nice crisp breeze come in. You can start to pull out your favorite sweaters and jackets to wear on a evening walk and not be too hot. This is one of my favorite times in Northeast Ohio.

Now although this is one of my favorite times in NEO, it can be hard deciding what to wear. I love crop jeans, or just crop pants in general, and these cropped destroyed flares from Old Navy are one of my favorites for this time! Along with a nice light weight button down is great to wear during this time. It is just a timeless article to have, striped or solid. I got this striped button down from Target and what I love about this one, besides being light weight, is that is very long in length to make it easier to tuck in or tie in front, which is what I am doing below.

Please lets talk about these slip on mule loafers which are also from Target and are most importantly, COMFORTABLE! I have been looking at this style of shoe for a very long time. When Gucci came out with them over a year ago and the price tag was a bit too steep, then shortly after that Steve Madden came out with their version which was more in reason (around $80 I believe), but when Target came into play the price was right at $23 and I had to get them!

This outfit, although casual, has a little bit of flare with bringing in the slip on mule loafers. I like to mix two type of styles together (although sometimes it doesn’t work) to create a new style. Its unexpected, but doesn’t give a feeling of too dressed down or too dressed up which can worn in multiple settings or transitional periods.

When looking for transitional pieces think light weight but also pieces that can cover up or light layers for those times were it does get warmer during midday. Cropped pants are another great piece to wear since you don’t have to wear boots yet (not that they will look bad necessarily) . And the best part is that these pieces will be also great for the winter to spring transition.

Scroll down and get excited for fall in Northeast Ohio – one of the most beautiful time us us NEOhioians.

Summertime Gingham

Happy 4th of July weekend/week! I feel like I may be a little late with the relevance of this post but I wanted to share this off the shoulder shirt I got from Target a week back that I will be rocking this 4th of July! I feel like I have a love-hate relationship with the off the shoulder top, on one hand, they look adorable and stylish and on the other hand, I raise my arms above a certain point. But in the name of fashion, I will fight through my limited arm mobility. Is it me, or is gingham having a bigger moment this summer than usual? Gingham is usually a spring/summer staple print but I am seeing a bigger presence this summer and I love it! Give me navy gingham or give me death!

Keep scrolling to see how I style this gingham off the shoulder top from Target.

Target’s Natural Aisle

Hello to all that have stumbled on my blog this fine day! I have been slowly transitioning to natural, cruelty-free, and even vegan products when and where I can. A few weeks ago I was at Target and picked up a couple new natural products to try and decided I wanted to share them with you!

I am sure all of you are aware how Target has completely upped their game when it comes to these products, and how they are bringing smaller brands to the masses. Another reason to spend hours in Target. But without further ado here is what I picked up!

Zum Frankincense and Myrrh Mist

First off I love the description of this product, “spritzes away bad vibes and nasty funk, leaving you in an aromatherapy paradise”. I’ve noticed this mist before but never paid much attention to it and finally decided to pick it up and check it out. The scent is very strong, only one or 2 spritzes necessary and if you’re not an essential oil fan this scent may be a little much for you. It is a dark woodsy that instantly gives me a sense of comfort. I’ve been spraying it around my room every few days when I am not using my oil diffuser.

Fig + Yarrow Facial Serum Rosehip + Argan

Another great natural Target find! Target and Fig + Yarrow teamed up to create exclusive products for Target stores and this serum is just one of them. This serum is derived from plants so this may be as natural as it can get. Although this is a serum it acts more as a facial oil, but it absorbs nicely into the skin and a little bit goes a long way. When I apply my moisturizer it doesn’t leave my skin with a heavy feeling, which I was initially scared of since I felt it was more of a facial oil. Fig + Yarrow recommends using this serum along with their Complexion Water, which may be a future purchase to try. Also, can we talk about this killer packaging? I wish I wasn’t a sucker for packaging, but we got to give credit where it is deserved. So far I have just been using this during the day and honestly, have been really liking, it too early to tell if I am noticing any difference but I will keep you updated.

Pacifica Aquarian Gaze Mascara Abyss

This 100% vegan and a cruelty-free brand have a pretty decent waterproof mascara. Now there are no bells and whistles that come along with this formula, I am just happy that by 10:00 am I don’t have raccoon eyes. This is just a good basic, no frills mascara that has good staying power. If you are looking for volume or lengthening this probably wouldn’t be the one for you but it could probably be a good base if you like layering.

What have you tried from Target’s natural Aisle?

March 2017 Favorites

Happy Monday to all! Is it me or did March fly by? I can’t believe it is already April and we already have showers, at least in Cleveland. Below are my favorites things from 5 different categories for the month of March, I hope you find something below to try for the month of April!

Books, Movies, & TV

Book: Not That Kinda Girl by Lena Dunham

First off let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Lena’s work and what she stands for, so I was really excited to start this book. Second, I listened to this book on Audible (literally one of the best things invited today) and loved that she personally narrated her book. What I loved about this book is that you can see where she drew her inspiration for in Girls and Tiny Furniture and made me feel like I had a better understanding of her work and who she is as a person. She talks about uncomfortable topics that a lot of people still shy away from today and tackles them head on. It is a fantastic read/listen and I recommend you picking it up this April if you haven’t already.

Movie: Beauty and the Beast

GOOSEBUMPS! I had goosebumps and was on the edge of my seat for this movie. I felt like a little kid again and was filled with nostalgia. I hear people disappointed that it wasn’t EXACTLY like the cartoon original and I hear some people say it wasn’t different enough, but if you take it for what it is as its own independent movie you will thoroughly enjoy it. Also, the soundtrack is killer so I recommend giving that a listen too.

TV: Netflix’s Original Love season 2

This comedy stems from the minds of Judd Apatow, Lesley Arfin, and Paul Rust. Season 1 hooked me where two polar opposite people meet by chance and it shows a good look at dating in today’s modern age. If you a single person in today’s world you will definitely get a good laugh out of this and shake your head in agreeance as you possibly relate to it.

Activities

Wineries –

Wineries seemed to be a big part of March. My cousin had her bridal shower at one outside of Erie and my friend Courtney had a winery crawl in Geneva. I’ve never been to Geneva wineries (I know, right?) so I was really excited to celebrate Courtney’s birthday there. We started at Laurentia which was beautiful, we enjoyed two bottles of white wine in the cellar. Then we moved to South River which is in an old church, they were having an ice wine festival so it was a bit packed but we lucked out snagging a table and switched it up to their Trinty red wine. Last but not least we ended at Hundley Cellars for some more white wine, some snacks, and live music!

Car Shopping –

This past week I went car shopping since my lease was up and I am pretty pumped about my new car. After having a VW Jetta for 4 years I wanted to upgrade to a small SVU, a VW Tiguan to be exact. Although nobody wants to spend their entire day at a car dealership I am really happy so far with my new car.

Beauty (Skincare & Makeup)

Glosser Cloud Paint –

As we all know I LOVE GLOSSIER so I had a feeling I was going to like their new Cloudpaint Blushes. First of all, Glossier killed it with the packaging, yet again, they look like acrylic paints which bring me back to my art class days. A little product goes a long way which means this tube of blush will last you awhile. It comes it four shades, Dusk (nudey), Puff (pink), Beam (coral), and Haze (berry) which were inspired by the NYC sunsets. Glossier was and still is offering a 2 for $30 deal with the code 2BLUSH, I got Dusk and Haze. Haze is the perfect flush which looks like maybe I just went to the gym maybe not? (definitely not, though). And Dusk which is a nudey colors which I have been using as a natural looking bronzer and an eyeshadow. These formulas blend effortlessly together and on my skin. L’Oreal Paris Skin Care Pure Clay Mask Detox and Brighten –

This was an impulse purchase at Walgreens between coupons and sales it was “basically” free. Out of the 3 clay masks that L’Oreal has out at the moment, I decided on the detox and brightening mask since it was more geared towards a normal skin type. What I love about this mask besides its actually easy to apply and remove compared to other clay masks, you can actually see the impurities being drawn out. I love when I can see products working.

Hair

Umberto Dry Texture Spray –

I love texturizing spray, it is my favorite thing to use when I curl my hair. I needed a new one and was at target one day and wasn’t in the mood to spend more than $10 and this guy was $9.99. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did, and although I never heard or used the brand before, I have seen it in Target for quite some time. If you want a good texturizing spray at a good price point give this one a try!

Batiste Dry Shampoo Clean & Light Bare –

I hate washing my hair and if I can drag out my hair style for a couple days I will and a good way of doing that is a dry shampoo. And surprise, you don’t need to spend a lot on a decent dry shampoo. My favorite drugstore dry shampoo has been Dove for quite some time, but my friend Gina swears by Bastiste! I decided to give it a try and I am not disappointed. I decided to get the Bare scent, which is a clean and light scent that is not overwhelming. Move over Dove I think I have a new drugstore dry shampoo favorite!

Fashion

MIA Elsa Mules –

Ever since I received these last week I cannot stop wearing them! I talked about them in my Shoes for Spring post from last week (you can read it here). I love the effortless vintage look it has been adding to my outfits and it is such a great transitional show moving from winter to spring.

What did you love in the month of March? And let me know if you have tried anything I mentioned!

Five Things // January 27, 2017

Hello wonderful humans of the internet and happy FriYAY! Is it too early to kick back and relax with a glass of wine and Netflix? No? Okay then, I guess I will just share 5 things I have been into lately instead.

One // New Beauty Products

Over the past week I have acquired some new products I am excited to try out! I have added to my Glossier addiction, and I think it’s safe to say its becoming problem.

Hello, my name is Alison and I have a Glossier problem. I order their Stretch Concealer in Medium,  Generation G Matte Lipstick in the shade Cake, and yet another Balm Dotcom in the flavor Coconut. I think I am going to do a post very soon reviewing all of the Glossier products that I have acquired over the past month or so.

Another new product that I just got and started using is the Kristen Ess’s The One Signature Shampoo & Conditioner that just launched exclusively at Target. Both are 10oz. bottles for $10 each, so not too bad if you are used to spending a little more for your haircare products. This was the only shampoo and conditioner pair that was part of this new line and from what the bottle reads this is for all hair types. This is supposed to be lightly clarifying but safe for everyday use and weightlessly moisturizing which is good if you have finer hair. I like that this is sulfate-free but claims to give a good lather if that is important to you. The jury is out on the scent, although it has a very high-end salon smell once your hair is dry, I don’t know how I feel about it when I am washing it.

Two // Split

Over the past weekend My mom and I went to see the movie Split starring James McAvoy (according to my mom, that’s her man). What can I say about this movie other wow… just WOW! It was such a well done psychological thriller, as in sitting on the edge of my sit covering my mouth with my hands because I cannot believe the amazing plot unfolding before me, psychological thriller. McAvoy plays a man who suffers from DID (dissociative identity disorder) and has 23 different personalities residing inside him. He kidnaps 3 girls in preparation for a 24th personality to surface. I highly recommend seeing this movie and basically hooks you right in from the start.

Three // EyeBuyDirect

I believe it was the day before Christmas Eve (or Christmas Eve Eve, if you are a Friends fan) I got my 2 little packages with my brand new glasses from EyeBuyDirect and something tells me there will be more little packages from them in the future.

If you read last week’s post where I talk about how I discovered my Lo & Sons bag, I also discovered personally EyeBuyDirect on my Pinterest feed as well. Again I did what I always do, stalk a company through Instagram, see what what people tagged them in and how their glasses were looking IRL. First of all I am a big believer in not paying an arm and a leg for glasses so when these eyeglass companies began popping up I was all for trying them out. I did the home try on with Warby Parker and everything I picked I wasn’t very crazy about once I got to try them on. Then I tried Zenni and I actually have 3 eyeglasses and 1 prescription sunglasses that I really like. But there was something about EyeBuyDirect that really interested me to try them, they have a very minimalistic feel to their brand/styles which I liked and made me want to try.

I decided to try the brand out during the holidays when they had a 2 for 1 deal, and after days of narrowing it down I decided on two pairs. I got the Aurora in Flecked Ivory as a more everyday style and then Theory in Translucent as my more stylist pair. Both glasses are a classic keyhole style which I feel fits my face shape and personal style well. If you want to give it a try and get $10 off your first pair use my code IFSNJ2VM5M.

Four // Amazon Fire Tablet

Last week I bit the bullet I have been thinking about for awhile, buying an Amazon Fire Tablet. Amazon offers 5 versions of their tablet that caters to different lifestyles and end uses. I ended up choosing their cheapest model, Fire Tablet 7″ Display, 8 GB (Includes Special Offers), in Black since I don’t plan on using it for anything too crazy. I liked the idea of the smaller size that if I wanted to I would have the option of fitting it into my purse and I also thought this size would be very travel friendly. I am getting ready to go on a business trip to Germany and this way I can download books, movies, and shows to entertain me on the long flight. Overall my first impressions were very good, although it took some getting used to if you are an “Apple product snob” like I used to be (I am slowly crossing over into the Amazon product world). I was able to download easily every app that I wanted to, and I like that my Audible and Kindle books already were on there. I would recommend trying this tablet if you are mostly looking for a tablet as a source of entertainment because for the price I think its a nifty little thing.

Five // You Must Remember This, Podcast

600x600bb

So I don’t know if you’ve jumped on the podcast bandwagon but if not what are you waiting for? I have a list of podcasts that I listen to while getting ready in the morning or sometimes on my commute to and from work. But I am not here today to give you a list of my favorite podcasts (at least not yet), I am here to talk about one in particular, You Must Remember This (YMRT). The best way to describe this podcast is straight from the source, it is about the secret and/or forgotten history of Hollywood’s first century. Karina Longworth does a fantastic job of researching and narrating different parts of history that took place in Hollywood, by splitting historical stories up into mini series. The one series in particular they got my hook these past few week was titled “Charles Manson’s Hollywood”. If you are not familiar with the infamous cult leader turned murderer of the 60’s I highly recommend you give this a listen as it completely dissects all of the events and people involved with Manson leading up to the Manson Family murders. Bravo Karina, bravo!

Five Things // January 20, 2016

Happy Friday Everyone! Today I thought I would talk to you about my 5 favorite essentials that I always keep in my purse!

img_0630

But first let me tell you about my actual purse where I keep all these favorite things! I have the Lo & Sons The Pearl in saffiano black leather with gold hardware, perfect for the winter months. A little over a year ago, Pinterest ads kept popping up all the time in my feed and would always catch my eye. I eventually started doing a little more research on this bag, mostly on Instagram (sidebar: if I am ever curious about a product I like to look on the brand’s tagged Instagram photos to see what people really think about it), to make sure it was worth the price and that the brand itself checked out. I ended up buying it during a sale where I got a great deal on it and have been very happy with my purse ever since! It’s a great cross-body that is easily adjustable with such a vast amount of space for how compact looking it is. I was very impressed with the quality and the company’s great customer service (had some shipping issues), I even added their small Weekender bag to my Christmas wish list!

One // Lip Product Collection

I admit I am one of those people that has at least 5+ lip products with her at all times, but hey you never know what the occasion will call for. I have chapstick, tinted chapstick, lip liner, nude, mauve, burgundy, and red galore! Lately besides my tinted chapstick I talked about last week, but I also have really been loving this nudish one from Sephora, Sephora Collection Color Lip Last Lipstick in Brown Is Back. It is this pinky light brown in a matte finish that can look great on anyone!

Two // Vintage Mirror

I don’t know about you but I am not talented enough to apply lipstick and especially not lip liner without a mirror, that’s why I always carry one with me! Over the summer my mom and I went to Flower Child out in Lakewood and we found this vintage compact with a pearl like top. I thought it was so feminine and delicate I had to have it. I love vintage pieces and incorporating them in today’s life and this little mirror was perfect to keep in my purse.

Three // Revlon Nail Clipper

I know this is a random one but, a nail clipper! I always break my nails or I have a cuticle situation that needs corrected before it gets out of hand and every time one of those happens I am so happy I have my nail polish splattered Revlon nail clipper. It’s one of those things that you may never need but or oh so happy when you do! Even if it’s sometimes is using it as a pair of makeshift scissors to cut a tag off or anything of the sorts.

Four // Perfume Oil

I would like to think is my signature scent is Elizabeth and James’s Black Nirvana, since I have been wearing for I believe the last 4 years. Its a blend of violet, sandalwood, and vanilla; border-lining masculine and feminine while making you feel all warm and cozy inside. When I first got this product it was during the holiday time and Sephora was offering a gift set which included this travel-size perfume oil, perfect to keep with you throughout the day if you feel that you need a touch up.

Five // Wallet

I feel like this one should be a given? I really love my current wallet, its more small and compact compared to ones I’ve had before, but still fits everything I need. I got it a couple months ago from Target and was immediately drawn to the color, I would say its a plum-ish burgundy shade. I was in the market for a smaller wallet since I was getting sick of my other ones taking up the majority of my bag and this was perfect! It is from Target’s Merona line and unfortunately I don’t believe the color is in stock anymore, but there are still a ton of great colors currently!

What essentials do you keep in your purse?
