How to Survive a International Flight

Now I still don’t consider myself a pro-international traveler, but this past year I have traveled internationally a few times and each time I refine what I think I truly need on the flight with me. So here are some things that I will be taking with me in my carry on next week when I travel to Munich, Germany for the second time this year.

Lip Balm // Hello dry lips! I feel like airplanes and dry lips go hand in hand and a heavy duty lip balm is necessary. My go-to lip balm should be no surprise to you guys, Glossier’s Balm Dotcom in coconut is my favorite scent, but I also like the cherry to add a hint of color to my lips. Get 20% off your first order here with my rep link.

Solid Cleanser // The key when traveling is to take a few liquids as possible. My favorite solid cleanser is Farmacy Green Clean, this product smells so fresh and it is cruelty-free. This product removes waterproof makeup which is really important to me as I religiously wear waterproof mascara.

Facial Mist // A sure way to feel instantly refreshed and awake is a facial mist and my favorite is Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe Herbs and Rosewater. The only thing is I would recommend maybe spritzing yourself in the bathroom or you neighbor may get a little mist as well.

Masks and/or Under Eye Treatment // Like I mentioned above airplanes dry out your skin so masks are a great way to help keep your skin looking fresh. If you feel comfortable with applying a mask midflight there are some great ones you can actually sleep in and then take a facial wipe to remove. I really like Embryolisse lait-crème concentrè which can be used as a face mask, facial lotion, and face primer before makeup.

Multitasking Makeup // The less makeup the better, I don’t like feeling overwhelmed with a lot of products when traveling so products that can have multiple purposes is perfect!

Dry Shampoo // When I travel for work sometimes I don’t get the luxury of having a lot of refresh time when I check into the hotel before I have to leave again. A way to keep my hair fresh is to dry shampoo my hair before take off, usually in the airport bathroom, and only slightly work it into my hair. I quite possible look weird with some dry shampoo showing my hair feels like gross when I get off the flight. I really like Batiste but honestly, I’ll take any travel size I can find.

Hand Sanitizer // I feel like I have been mentioning how the air and the water aren’t the best when it comes to germs so I really like to keep a hand sanitizer on me and this Honest Spray Hand Sanitizer is my favorite. It’s really easy to use and smells like oranges.

Tylenol PM // I don’t know about you but falling asleep in on a 13+ hour flight can be difficult sometimes and you need a little extra help. I really like Tylenol PM because it helps you fall asleep and it combats the aches and pains that come with sleeping in an airplane seat.

Vitamin C // There are so many germs floating around an airplane with the recycled air and all. I start taking vitamin C a few days before I depart and then throughout my entire trip. I really like the Vita Fusion gummies because they are actually delicious to eat and taste just like orange candy.

Compression Clothes // My favorite bottoms to wear on a long flight are my compression leggings I got on Amazon this past year or I recently got these new Aerie joggers that are so soft and comfy, but with the joggers, I may get compression socks to help with long flight swelling.

Slanket (scarf/blanket) // I saw a post on Into The Gloss where they used this term and insistently loved it to describe the legendary travel scarf/blanket.

Smell Good // Travel deodorant is the best way to keep smelling good. The one thing you do not want to do it put any harsh scents on you while on the plane, you want to wait until you get off the plane to spray yourself with perfume. I recently ordered Native in scent vanilla coconut from a recommendation my friend Courtney gave me. Native has a line of sensitive skin which is baking soda free which as we know from my past deodorant post my skin does not do well with baking soda.

Facial Wipes // We all know that feeling when you wake up from a nap and feel the need to splash water on your face. Now airplane water isn’t the best and getting to the bathroom is sometimes a hassle so these Garnier micellar water facial wipes are my favorite to get the sleepies out of my eyes. I follow with my facial spray and I feel 10 times more awake and refreshed.

Headphones // Now I wish I could lie and say I cozy up with a book during my long flight and get a lot of reading done, and I do on domestic flights, but with the temptation of movies literally at my fingertips, I get completely sucked in. I recommend a good pair of noise-canceling headphones so you can be completely undisturbed while you binge watch a pretty decent choice of movies or shows, only to be disturbed by the stewardess for snacks.

2 Days in London

This year I have to say I feel truly blessed by the travel gods – or should I say that my job thought it was a good idea to send little ole me to Europe twice this year. Now I didn’t spend as long as I would have liked to in London but with what free time that was granted to me, I really tried to squeeze in anything and everything I can.

Between meetings and just general work, the best option seemed to be a hop on hop off bus tour. A lot of travel blogs I read beforehand said these were great for when you don’t have a lot of time at a destination but want to see a lot.

I was able to cover a lot of ground in a short amount since the route I chose to take took me past a lot of the main sights but I did get off at Harrods department store to get lost in there a bit. The store occupies a 5-acre site and has 330 departments covering one million square feet of retail space. Several of its departments, including the seasonal Christmas department and the food halls, are well known.

The hotel I stayed at was near the Tower Bridge and was a great location to be a bit away from all the hustle and bustle of central London but was still easy to get to places and I just had to walk a block to hail a taxi.

There were some great sites to see that were in easy walking distance to the hotel, it was a lot of fun to stumble on while exploring. Also, random side note, I was very happy I decided to bring my raincoat as I got to experience some true London weather during my time there.

For dinner, I had two amazing dining experiences that I would recommend to anyone. They were both in walking distance to my hotel and came with great ambiance and views.

Gauchos was a fantastic Argentinian steakhouse with spectacular views of the Tower Bridge.  Everyone in my party got steak and split a bottle of Malbec. Surprisingly the hardest thing to decide on was the wine since there were about 4 pages of Malbec to choose from!

The Ivy Tower Bridge is a British brasserie with a menu serving modern British and international Ivy-inspired classics. It was here I got my classic fish and chips with a side of mashed peas, and of course some British beer!

One of the biggest things I noticed while strolling around London is how the majority of the pubs were dripping with flowers. While on the bus tour I found saw the Churchill Arms pub that had to have the most flowers in London, it was so beautiful, I only wish it was a stop on the tour so I could get off and have a pint.

Even though I had a short two days in London I can’t wait to go back for pleasure and explore and experience more of what this city has to offer. I would have given anything to just have one more day. London quickly became one of my favorite cities in just a short time.

April 2017 Favorites

Happy Monday to all my readers I hope you all had a fun filled weekend! Another month passes us by and here we are in May! April was filled with a lot of fun adventures and trying a lot of new things, so without further ado here are my favorites from April.

Products

Sweet Dish & Darling Candles

Peachwood Amber & Patchouli Grapefruit

At April’s Cleveland Flea I purchased 2 candles from Sweet Dish & Darling soy candles, I got the scents Peachwood Amber and Patchouli Grapefruit. I usually gravitate to the more woodsy/muskier scents but these had an unusual sweetness that you would normally not find paired with amber or patchouli which really got me, I couldn’t stop smelling them. So far I am currently burning Peachwood Amber and I love the smell that fills up my room, I can’t wait to burn the next one.

Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant

Buy it on Amazon

I talked about my recent purchase of this baking soda free deodorant in this past post but after trying it for over a month now I love it! This deodorant does not irritate my underarms which was my biggest problem when first switching over to natural deodorant. Also, the grapefruit scent is subtle but pleasant. Although this doesn’t last the whole day, it does get me through at least 8-10 hours without needing to be reapplied. If you are thinking about switching to natural deodorants I would recommend this one because in my personal opinion the baking soda based ones were too much and this helps you ease into the transition.

SUNDAY RILEY Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment (Sample Size)

FullSizeRender_1

Buy it Here from Sephora

I got a Sephora sample earlier this month and was crazy excited to try it out, I am sure most of you have heard about this brand. And let me tell you this product completely lives up to its hype! The only way I can describe what it does for my skin is healthier, it just appears healthier. The only downside to this? The price point… this product is $105 and the sound of that kinda hurts my wallet. Now don’t get me wrong this product is definitely worth the price tag, but I  wanted to see if there was an alternative out there. I am sure a lot of you have seen the brand The Ordinary out there, that offers good products at a low price point. I order their lactic acid product recently, and once I get it and try it out I will let you know how it compares to Sunday Riley and my thoughts.

Backstreet Boys Concert in Las Vegas

This past month my friend Gina and I traveled to Las Vegas to see the Backstreet Boys and let me tell you I never felt more like my 8-year-old self! It was such a nostalgic experience to relive all those songs in person. Everyone in the audience was just feeding off each other’s energy it was amazing. This was their final week of performances before they went on their Las Vegas hiatus. We also got lucky enough to go to their after party where Kevin and Howie hosted and sang some great 90 throwback songs. Oh and also we worked our way to the front and Kevin held my hand for 1.5 seconds. Apparently, there is a Backstreet Boy cruise but that is sadly sold out already… next time BSB I am coming for you at sea.

The Cleveland Flea Homepage

This past month The Cleveland Flea kicked off the spring season with their first flea! I love the flea, it creates such a perfect Saturday in Cleveland offering vintage pieces, original creations, and food/drinks to die for. It’s important to support these small local businesses because they are what make Cleveland great, original, and feel like home. I went with my mom and friend Eileen on the brisk Saturday morning as we clung to our hot coffees, we all walked away with a little something that day. You should check out the next flea May 13 from 9-4 pm if you have the chance, you won’t be disappointed.

S-Town Podcast

S-Town Podcast from Itunes

So I started this podcast because there was a lot of hype about it and it made me curious. And let me tell you I am one episode from being done and I am still thinking to myself WTF? It is basically about a guy named John from what he calls Shittown, Alabama. Its hosted/investigated by Brian Reed from Serial and This American Life. This podcast starts off with an alleged murder that has taken place but justice is not being served which upsets John, but then turns into this Grey Gardens like vibe about John’s life. It’s quite fascinating and I encourage you to give it a listen if you are in the market for a new podcast, there are a lot of episodes so it doesn’t take a lot of commitment.

NAVY VERSION – AERIE ONE PIECE SWIMSUIT

Recently I have gotten two new one-piece bathing suits from Aerie and I am obsessed! First off I am so happy for the one-piece comeback and second, Aerie has such great suits to choose from. I got one more “basic” plum colored one with a criss-cross back and then one more “fun” vintage red one with ruffles and a small cut out. Both are flattering and are super comfortable to wear all day at the pool. You can find me in them all summer long by the pool.

What have you loved this past month?

Germany // March 3rd, 2017

Hello wonderful humans after having a guest blogger and taking a week off I am finally back and here to tell you about my Germany trip that I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to go on for business 2 weeks ago. I can probably sit here and write paragraphs on my trip but I am not going to make you sit through that read so I am going to try to compact it as much as possible. So settle in cause here we go…

Sites

Our trip started in Frankfurt, Germany and to be honest my first impression was “did I even leave the states?”. I think when we think of a foreign country (especially our first trip) we have this idea in our heads what it should look like straight off the bat. After a few days of sticking to the area around the hotel, I was finally able to venture to Old Town or Altstadt which is a city district of Frankfurt. The main site to see is Römerberg plaza where Germans hold fairs, Christmas markets, and coordinations. The first thing I thought when I got out of the taxi cab is “now this is a little bit more like it”. Unfortunately, only a few sections were rebuilt after WWII and out of that fewer older buildings are preserved. It was early morning when I was walking around so a lot of places weren’t open, but that was fine by me since I was there to soak in the architecture. Our walk lead us to the Main River that runs through Frankfurt where the bridges had locks placed on it by lovers.

Literally a few hours later I boarded a plane and headed south to Munich. Out of both Frankfurt and Munich, I definitely enjoyed Munich much more! The city was so clean and had more German architecture than Frankfurt did. The city was young and bustling, I couldn’t wait to explore on that sunny afternoon. After checking into the hotel and getting directions to the city center we purchased our subway tickets and took the train to the city center which is described as the heart of Munich. I think for Munich I am going to try to let my pictures do the talking…

This is the New Town Hall government building that resides in the city center of Munich. Just look at this gothic architecture! When looking this up I found it humorous that it is the “new” town hall because the government moved from the old town hall in 1874.

The Bavarian restaurant and beer garden Augustiner am Dom where we dined at on Tuesday night where I had wiener schnitzel for the second time.

The amount of high end (and I mean HIGH end) shopping in the city center was insane, I felt like I was back on 5th ave in NYC.

Of course, the one beautiful church we find was having renovations done, although it still looks beautiful.

Bier

Bottomline you have not had beer unless you have had German beer in my opinion. Apparently to be considered German beer you have to follow some pretty strict guidelines, or the purity law from what I understand and that’s what makes it so delicious! This law only permits the usage of water, hops, and barley malt; I feel like this is probably why I woke up the next day after drink 2 of these bad boys feeling great and not hungover at all. I only drank wheat beer when I was there, which normally I am not a fan of here in the US, but it went down so smooth it was hard to pass up. So when you are in Germany make sure you order some white/wheat beer!

Food

I love food and I love trying new food, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t the most excited to go to Germany and try as much German food as I could. Eileen was thoughtful enough to make me a, should we say, food bucket list. I think I did a pretty decent job knocking off some on the list, 6 out of 13 isn’t too bad, right? We also did some non-typical German food some nights. Friday we had Italian where I had the homemade tagliolini with truffle oil prepared in a parmesan cheese wheel with black truffles shredded on top (my mouth is watering just thinking about this again). After a suggestion from our dinner guests, I tried an Italian drink which the germans adopted called Aperol Spritz, which is peritif cocktail consisting of prosecco, Aperol and soda water. And Sunday we had some delicious Ramen in chicken broth with filet of beef, paired perfectly with a German beer of course!

Saturday night we had more authentic German food where I finally got my hands on wiener schnitzel with cranberries and lemon served with a side of potato and cucumber salad. In fact, our whole table of 7 ordered the exact same thing! The waiter was nice enough to put an appetizer sampler together where we got to try a bunch of different things, the mini potato pancakes stood out to me as the most delicious, but I am usually a fan of any form of potato.

At the airport, before we headed to Munich we stopped for a bite to eat and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to try apple strudel. Which for a person who isn’t the biggest dessert person, this was delicious! I couldn’t finish the whole thing but I am very happy I was able to try some!

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

Monday night in Munich we tried Brenner Operngrill from hotel recommendation where the ambiance was so inviting with a modern decor. This night I was really feeling a steak dinner and when consulting with the waiter he recommended the thin slices of beef because in his words “it was more delicate to eat for the lady”. I took his recommendation and I am so glad I did. Topped with arugula, parmesan, and fresh squeezed lemon, I devoured the whole thing.

Fashion Inspiration

I love when I travel somewhere and come back feeling so inspired from the fashion that I observed being there. Although it was winter and chilly in Germany that was no exception. Most young women I saw all seemed to have a similar look when it came to what they wore outside to keep warm, a mid-length single breasted peacoat or a cocoon coat in various subtle neutral colors or patterns. When I decided to accompany my mom on a winter coat hunt for herself I wasn’t expecting to find one for myself at a reasonable price that reminded me of what I had felt inspired by in Germany. My mom was actually the first one to try it one but then I ended up swooping in and buying this Lucky Brand coat in black and white tweed!

In addition to the coats, I noticed a lot of black leather chelsea booties with little to no heel. I loved this look, a very effortless European cool vibe this gave off. When I returned I was off on the hunt for a classic black leather chelsea bootie! I didn’t want to pay an arm and a leg but I still wanted the boots I purchased to hold up over time. I ended up finding these Cole Haan booties for the right price at the right time since I think they are still full price on their website. I am a size 8 in all shoes so when I saw that most people felt they ran a little small and to go up a half size I still ended up going with an 8 because usually when people say that I am still pretty dead on with my true size and I figured the leather would give a little over time (and if not I am Amazon Prime for a reason). I am glad I did get an 8 because they fit like a glove! No, I can’t wear a thick sock but I wouldn’t want to with these boots. A trouser sock or tights work perfectly with these beauties.

Besides the shocking amount of people that smoked all over the city and the amount of dogs allowed in business another thing that I noticed was that a lot of people wore glasses. The more fashionable ones that you seem more and more people opting for here. Whether they were prescription or not I loved the nerdy chic style that everyone there seemed to have. Needless to say, I came back to the US feeling very inspired by the styles that I saw on the streets in Germany.

Have you every been to Germany? Comment down on this post and let me know what you loved about your visit to Deutschland!

Five Things // February 10th, 2017

Happy Friday wonderful people! If you are reading this right when it posted then I have already landed in Germany, hallo Deutschland! Yes, that is right I was lucky enough to get to go for 6 days on business! While getting ready for this trip I thought I would do a post on what things are important to me when I travel and what items I use. So why don’t we just dive right in!

So why don’t we just dive right in!

One // Comfort

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

Whether I am on a short or long flight it is still important to me to try to be as comfortable as possible and that can mean different things for flights. For the that I am taking, I know that it is going to be a long overnight one so my comfort items I am bringing will cater to that. Probably my number one item is an eyemask (Amazon), I sleep better in complete darkness and I have an easier time falling asleep. Also aiding in the sleeping process are earplugs (Amazon), these are just as important! Especially if there are young children on the flight or chatty people around you, it’s good to have something to block out all the noise. A neck pillow (Amazon) adds much needed to support since I am so susceptible to stiff necks… they are the worse and I hate them. To round out this group I added a scarf (Abercrombie & Fitch, no longer available) which can have multiple uses. It can serve as a blanket for extra warmth or even as a makeshift neck pillow in case you forgot one or it is a short enough flight and you don’t want the extra items to haul around.

Two // Entertainment

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

Entertaining yourself on a plane can be hard, especially for long flights. Sometimes your not in the mood to read what you brought or you’ve exhausted your Spotify playlists. That’s why I think it’s important to have a few options to entertain yourself. I have 2 books, one has short stories and one is a longer novel depending on my mood. I also have my Amazon Fire tablet with me where I have access to my audiobooks and some Netflix downloads (I downloaded the Crown and I am very excited to check it out). On my iPhone I downloaded a playlist of some of my favorite songs and a few episodes of my favorite podcast, My Favorite Murder (great dark comedy podcast, two thumbs way up). And we can’t forget the noise canceling Beats headphones my friend Gina lent to me for my travels; thanks Gina you’re the BEST!

Three // Skincare & Hygiene

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

I want a few items to be easier to get to such as lotion, face wipes, lip balm, and my toothbrush & paste. Airplanes can be very drying as most of you know so having hand cream (Kiehl’s), face lotion (Nourish Organics) and lip balm (Glossier) is very helpful so my skin doesn’t feel dried out. Face wipes (Simple) are also great for longer flights to help you refresh a little after you’ve taken a long nap. And I don’t think I have to explain the toothbrush and paste (Marvis) too much. If you’ve slept for a couple hours this will help with any kind of dragon breath you might be facing, but also if it’s a short flight or you don’t feel like brushing your teeth on the plane a pack or gum will be sufficient enough until you get to your hotel room.

Four // Snacks

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

Packing snacks are very important because first you may not get food on your flight (not even peanuts, sad face) or you do get a meal and it may, unfortunately, be something you don’t like. If you don’t feel like bring your own you can always get something while at the airport. I think to bring simple snacks are a great option because you don’t want to anything to upset your something and you also want to courteous to people around you and some smells might upset people.

Five // Staying Healthy

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

I don’t know about you, but usually after I’ve been on a plane 9 times out of 10 I get some kind of bug. To help combat germs that circulate through that recycled air it is a good idea to bring some sort of antibacterial for your hands. Another great thing to have on hand are tissues! If it’s a cold plane ride and your nose is running you will be happy you have them or if you are in need of a napkin they will come in handy!

What is important to you when traveling?
